This chapter covers how to establish serial, SLIP, and PPP connections to remote hosts.
ツ Before attempting to connect to a remote host, make sure the
Network configuration panel is completed for the
appropriate connection type.
ツ See Section 2.6.4, Configuring for SLIP , and Section 2.6.5,
Configuring for PPP , for more information.
8.1 Establishing a Serial Connection
A remote TTY connection through a terminal window gives you access to the available services on the remote host you are connecting to, but does not allow the use of any TCP/Connect II advanced features, such as FTP, Mail, and News.
ツ TTY is a low-speed asynchronous communications protocol
with limited or no error checking.
If you are using a remote TTY connection, you may need to use the Communications Toolbox file transfer tools, such as XModem or Kermit, to perform file transfers within the TTY session.
It is convenient to use the Apple Modem tool to establish a connection using a modem since it automatically handles dialing and retries busy numbers. The Apple Modem tool works with most brands of modems.
To establish a serial connection using the Apple Modem tool:
1. Choose Terminal窶ヲ from the Services menu.
竏 The Open a Terminal session dialog is displayed.
2. Choose Apple Modem Tool from the Session Name pop-up
menu.
3. Click Connect. (Or click Cancel to close the dialog without
establishing a connection.)
竏 The Apple Modem tool connects to the remote host, and a
terminal window is displayed, providing access to the
service you connected to by modem.
8.2 Establishing a SLIP Connection
To establish a connection using the TCP/Connect II built-in SLIP client, you can either connect manually, or you can create a scripted connection. This procedure shows how to manually establish a connection using the serial port directly.
ツ SLIP , or the Serial Line Internet Protocol , is a member of
the TCP/IP protocol suite that allows data communication
over a low-speed asynchronous serial line. SLIP is used for
dialup connections.
ツ To use the serial port as your connection method for remote
access, you must set parameters in the Serial configuration
panel.
You can perform this procedure if you have not installed the Apple Modem tool, if the Apple Modem tool does not work with your modem, or if you want to implement a custom retry algorithm.
To use the TCP/Connect II built-in SLIP client to establish a SLIP connection to a remote host:
1. Make sure SLIP is selected and configured in the Network
configuration panel, and that appropriate SLIP parameters
are set.
ツ See Section 2.6.4, Configuring for SLIP , for details on
creating a SLIP configuration.
2. Choose Terminal窶ヲ from the Service menu.
竏 The Open a Terminal session dialog is displayed.
3. Choose Serial Port from the Session Name pop-up menu and
click Connect. (Or click Cancel to close the dialog without
connecting.)
竏 A terminal window is displayed.
4. Enter atdt followed by the phone number for your SLIP server.
竏 Your modem dials out and connects to the server.
5. Log in to the SLIP server.
6. Enter the appropriate command to start SLIP if necessary.
ツ The command to start a SLIP connection depends on the type
of server you are connecting to. Ask your System
Administrator or Service Provider for assistance.
7. Choose Start SLIP or PPP窶ヲ from the Services menu.
竏 A SLIP connection is established.
8.3 Establishing a PPP Connection
To establish a connection using the TCP/Connect II built-in PPP client, you can either connect manually or create a scripted connection. This procedure shows how to manually establish a connection using the Apple Modem tool.
ツ PPP , or the Point-to-Point Protocol , allows data
communication over a low-speed asynchronous serial line.
PPP is used for dialup connections.
ツ PPP is more robust than SLIP, which may require you to
collect additional configuration information.
ツ If you plan to use the Apple Modem tool as your connection
method, it must be configured to establish a PPP connection.
To use the TCP/Connect II built-in PPP client to establish a PPP connection to a remote host:
1. Make sure PPP is selected and configured in the Network
configuration panel, and that appropriate PPP parameters are
set.
ツ See Section 2.6.5, Configuring for PPP , for details on
creating a PPP configuration.
2. Choose Terminal窶ヲ from the Service menu.
竏 The Open a Terminal session dialog is displayed.
3. Choose Apple Modem Tool from the Session Name pop-up
menu, and click Connect. (Or click Cancel to close the dialog
without connecting.)
竏 A terminal window is displayed.
4. Log in to the PPP server.
ツ If you are connecting to a server that uses PAP, select Start
SLIP or PPP窶ヲ from the Services menu immediately, as the
server will time out and give up if you wait too long.
5. Type the appropriate command to start PPP if necessary.
ツ The command to start a PPP connection depends on the type
of server you are connecting to. Ask your System
Administrator or Service Provider for assistance.
ツ PPP begins sending data to TCP/Connect II immediately
after it is activated. This can cause what seems to be random
characters in the terminal window. This is normal and does
not indicate an error.
6. Choose Start SLIP or PPP窶ヲ from the Services menu.
